  1. I thought this video was interesting and made a lot of sense. It's true that most of peoples' stress today comes from thinking about the many things in our lives that worry us and brooding over them, which can cause physical consequences such as illness. I thought it was good that he talked not only about what causes stress but also how to deal with it. I think that everyone needs to find their own way of coping with the stress in their lives. Also, like it said in the video, when you find something that helps to relieve stress you should do it on a regular basis. Exercise is what helps me to relieve the stresses in my life. Kickboxing especially is a great way to get out built up tension and aggression. The problem is trying to find time to exercise with all of the things going on my life that stress me out. It is important to make a conscious effect to make time for stress relief in our lives so that stress doesn't build up and wear on us.

  2. Perspective is most definitely key in my eyes. Everything could be perceived as a stressful act or scenario, but its all on how you look at it. Like Alex said in class, being asked to give a one hour unprepared presentation could stress out some people, where others will look at it with a different point of view and be quite comfortable, or even happy, about that situation. So, when I get stressed out, I look at it from every angle and try to see the positive side before I allow myself to get too engulfed in the stress.

  3. i really liked this video as well. most of his tips for dealing with stress was very insightful and there are definatly somethings i'll try to incorporate into my daily life to deal with stress, however i probably won't begin grooming others, i don't think society is ready for people to begin doing that yet! haha. but i really liked how he made the point that humans aren't the only species to feel stress, so we shouldn't feel superior to other animals because literally everything in the universe feels stress, whats more important is what we do about it.

  4. I am wondering what it means to "get gored" and how we are supposed to avoid that, if anyone does know I am quite curious.

  5. I think it is very interesting how Dr.Sapolsky compares the causes of stress in humans and other mammals. The only real stress animals have is if they are being attacked or if something happening to their body. Humans, however, are stressed out by nearly everything in their environment mainly because we just are constantly thinking about it. I agree completely with Dr. Sapolsky in saying that our stress comes from our over thinking and over analyzing of every little detail. Because people are over thinking, the amount of stress we have seems to pile up and heavily wears on our bodies mentally and physically. Without that outlet to relieve stress, the amount of illness people see increases. Therefore it is very important for people to find and utilize that outlet that helps their stress levels decrease and helps them decrease their chances of becoming ill.

  6. I find it interesting that Dr. Sapolsky mentioned that is important not to bring stress onto other individuals. However, sometimes I find myself talking with people I'm close with to relieve stress...maybe it's not the best idea because it may bring upon more stress to that individual's life. Overall, I feel that it is important to find something of interest (hobby, etc.) to participate in so that stress can be relieved without affecting those around you. For instance I go to the gym on a regular basis so that I can have time to myself and to relieve various stressors.

  7. I thought that this video was pretty interesting. Like Mary, I have no idea what "gore" is supposed to mean. I also think that while Dr. Sapolsky's rules make sense, it is often hard to carry out in our society. Our face-paced nation brings about so many stressors on a daily basis that it is hard to get rid of them I think that finding something that relieves stress is a good idea, but I don't think it is possible to completely get rid of it in our culture due to SES, ethnicity and gender issues.

  8. Wether gored meant killed by the bloody stick of stress, bored, or even thinking to much. I know that i don't want it. But, it makes me wonder do i have it? Being a "typical" college student i am stressed. Whether this stress is due to classes, friends, boys, body-style or clothing its there. Dr. Sapolsky say's there are four ways to reduce stress.

The first being maintain perspective. I find that its almost impossible to maintain my own individual perspective. It is influenced by so many ideas that may or may not be true to my own. I would like to think that my life is less stressed than a farmer or a peasant, but is it? I don't know. Another reducer is maintaining perceptions, but once again i am confounded by the fact that all of my perceptions are influenced by what is the popular social perceptions.

Another one of Dr. Sapolsky's stress reducers is friends. Friend are very helpful. They can cheer you up they can make you feel better, but i find that as the semester goes on and becomes more and more stressful, friendships can have the same effect. Everyone is so stressed out that they are contributing to this viscous circle.

Based upon the former three reducers of stress i am going to have to say that whatever the forth one means i have it. " I got gorged." The amount of stress that has ben building up on society is monstrous. It does not contribute to a happy and flourishing environment. I do believe that there are ways to relieve stress; i just don't know what they are. If anyone else knows the answer feel free to let me know.

  9. One thing I have discovered over the past few years is that I think a lot of us stress out thinking about how stressed out we are. I have realized that if I didn't think so much about every little thing I have to do and either just did it or let it go, I wouldn't have a problem at all. We all have our own 'stress relievers' like going to the gym or taking a walk or whatever else, but when I'm done, I go right back to being as stressed as I was before. Now that I have used up another hour of time, I have even more stuff to cram into an hour less of space. Regardless, I feel like the only true de-stressor is taking care of the small stuff that builds up as we go, and not thinking about things for hours before we actually do them. Unfortunately, this doesn't really work. I am evidence.

  10. Putting things in perspective is an easy way of coping with stress. I may be feeling stress from an upcoming exam, but somewhere else in the world someone doesn't have food to eat or water to drink. Who is more stressed??? Obviously not me. Simply thinking about others who are in worse predicaments than myself is one way for me to successfully handle my stress levels.

  11. Stress is part of every college students lifestyle. Thinking of ways of dealing or coping with stress is beneficial. Friends are great, playing a sport, exercising etc. are great ways of dealing with stress.
