Hello Everyone,
I'm going to be holding a study group...maybe two if need be. Please leave a comment as to whether you are interested. I was thinking monday around noon, if this doesn't work for anyone then I would be willing to meet sunday.
We will be going over any issues that you may be having from the study guide. We will also go over some helpful approaches to the essay questions. Please come prepared with questions.
Goodluck studying!

Hey, just wanted to let everyone know that I WILL be on campus at 6 for everyone that wanted some extra help.
ReplyDeleteAlex, I have been trying to reach you for the past few days, if you could please get in touch with me, my e-mail is tflagg1@mail.une.edu
ReplyDeleteTyler, if you know how to get a hold of Alex, please let me know, as I really need to speak with her!

During the study group the question came up of what the difference was between methodological vs substantial criticisms of epidemiology. I talked with alex and this is what she said:
ReplyDeletemethodological problems: the way data is gathered, the problems with the data sources, the accuracy of data (race, class, gender biases with death certificates, etc).
Substantial problems: more philosophical... EVEN if the data was perfect there would be issues because the data reduces the complexity of people's lives to aggregate variables, and thus we miss the richness of a life. Also, the approach tends to isolate aspects of the 'web of causation' but rarely focuses on who or what is spinning the web (this is where reformist versus materialist argument comes in as the former doesn't do that either... ).
Hope this helps.
