ReplyDeleteAre the "discovery" of lyme disease, the WHO and the classification of epidemics, and the pharmaceutical industry and anxiety disorders examples of creating medical knowledge in the west which is socially distributed?
ReplyDeleteis the difference between informal and formal social control that informal is more implied while formal is more of a rigid set of regulations or standards?
ReplyDeleteAmy,
ReplyDeleteIn reference to each of your questions:
1) Yes, DTC ads and the classification of female sexual dysfunction are examples of the proliferation of medicalization. Remember to look at trends in these when using them as an example.
2) Please see most recent blog addition as this was a question discussed in the study groups.
3) Your spot on with your informal and formal social control. However, be careful defining informal as implied. It's more of a latent understanding of individual's desire to conform to norms. An example of this may be the recognition of a disapproving look...causing a change in action.
